48 families comprising 185 members, who had taken shelter in welfare transitional villages after escaping from the grip of the terrorists, will be settled in temporary houses.
With the launch of the humanitarian operation to liberate civilians from the LTTE terrorists, many civilians started seeking protection of the Security Forces. There was an increase in the exodus of civilians. The Government put up transitional villages on suitable land in Vavuniya to shelter them. Plans were crafted to meet all requirements of these civilians from within the villages.
At present, the Government is looking into their daily requirements. The programme has even earned accolades from the international community. Senior Presidential Advisor and Parliamentarian Basil Rajapakse is handling all these activities at the behest of the President. Arrangements have already been finalized to settle these civilians in houses. Accordingly, GA Vavuniya M. Charles said 48 families will be settled in the Sidambarapuram village. It is being done with the consent of the civilians. A special meeting was held at the Vavuniya GAs Office. UNHCR representatives attended the meeting. The Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services Ministry is handling the activities under the guidance of the Vavuniya GAs office. The Government is also spending 300 million rupees on three welfare villages which are coming up at Menik farm in Settikulam.
