DESCRIPTION: ATTENTION LOVERS OF THY DARK BREWS: Obsidian Stout by Deschutes Brewing is a "must try" American-style stout. I tried this excellent brew recently during a visit to the brewery in Bend, Oregon. They also offered a "nitro" version of the beer at the Pub House in downtown Bend. Adding nitrogen to the pour gave the beer a wonderful creaminess ala Guinness. I hunted down a six pack of the brew and brought it home for this review.

Deschutes uses only whole hop flowers, not hop pellets like some brewers. During a tour of the brewery, I saw a room filled to the top with bags of hop flowers. Smelling the raw hop was cool and you could feel the hop oil "stickiness" on your fingers. Obsidian uses these raw hops as well, and it weighs in at 55 of 100 on the bitterness scale -- adding a uniquely American twist to the classic Stout beer.

From www.deschutesbrewery.com: "Obsidian Stout is as black as the nearby volcanic flow from which it gets its name. It's a deep and satisfying experience, with distinct notes of chocolate, espresso, roasted malt and black barley. It is robust and full, with a big roasted finish." Nuff said. Let's pour the beer ...

POUR/TASTE: It sure looks like a Stout. A nice tan head sits atop the dark brown/black body; I needed to pour this one a bit harder at the end to produce the desired amount of head. The roasted malt is immediately apparent post pour -- it has a killer darkness about it. And it tastes excellent: Obsidian Stout is one big, bad beer that's nice 'n' chewy. It has wonderful roasted malt qualities with some hints of chocolate and coffee. Lurking in the sweet, bitter aftertaste are some of those whole-hop flowers. I taste it more in the post sip burp than on the tongue.

WOULD YOU BUY IT AGAIN? Yep. Obsidian Stout is excellent. Although not quite as creamy from the bottle as the "nitro" on-tap version, the beer is one of the best examples of an American Stout. I highly recommend you stock some in your MANLAND fridge!
