So I'm wondering, at this kind of temperature... after say an hour long drive, does the temp gauge even move? I remember driving at just -2 or so in a gasoline car and for about 20 minutes, the temp gauge wouldn't even move up past the bottom line.

@op3l On city driving, the engine temp dont grow but on the highway, it's not that hard to reach the third bubble even if it's a CDI. ;)

@dieselkiki I see. But if you're mainly driving around the city, how would you get warm air for the heater?

@op3l Smart CDI are equipe with an electric heater core beside the standard heater core under the dash board. It help to keep the cab comfortable and the windows clear of frost but it's a fact... the diesel engine of the smart CDI stay cold in city driving during cold weather. It's a chance for me that I must go on the highway every day to go to work! ;)
