Last fall, counterfeit bills were circulating around oak hill. Last week, three more were found in smithers and montgomery. Detectives in Fayette county says these counterfit cases come in clusters, and that businesses need to educate themselves to spot them quickly.

The $20 bill is the most frequently counterfeited bill that we see. You will occassionally see $100 and $50 bills, less frequently $5's and $10s and it's extraordinarily rare to see a counterfeit $1. It's just not worth their time, to counterfeit a one.

Many businesses will mark their bills with pens that will indicate whether the bill is fake or not. However, even that security measure is not fool proof.

These counterfeit detection pens are not 100% reliable, these businesses will count on them, but even the secret service does not endorse those counterfeit pens.

And for good reason, like many other quick fix products the pens will often give false results.

I have had a couple of cases where people came in and said, "I went to spend this money and the store said it was counterfeit and I got it from the bank", and we've checked it and gone through the security features and it's actually a legitimate bill that the pen has marked improperly.

That's why detectives recommend that the average spender and businesses alike learn to spot a real bill from a fake.

Each bill has anywhere 5 to 10 different security features to check if it is legitimate or not.

From microprinted numbers, a security strip embedded into the bill, and the hardest measure to copy.. a ghost image in the corner of the bill, you need to be familiar with a real bill from a fake, to ensure you don't fall victim to a counterfitters scheme.

It only takes a second to take the bill and to hold it up to the light, but Look to see if it looks legitimate, the security features are put there for a reason, they take a little longer to examine, but that's why they're there, to make the bills harder to counterfeit and to give people a way to verify it is legitimate US currency
