  • But in fact you are right: she was good at capturing the audience, that's true, but i'm talking about her voice... it isn't possible to say that Callas' voice is the best in the opera. Renata Scotto, Monserrat Caballè, Diana Damrau have certanly a more beautiful voice and diction!

  • Callas' s voice may not have been the most beautiful in Opera but she had a distinct sound of her own that you cannot miss when you hear. That is by itself a great asset. As far as beauty of voice is concerned Mme Caballe is without a doubt the Emperess of them all!!

  • but beauty is extremely subjective, isn't it? liking callas does not mean despising the other singers (as mr. francesco here might understand) honestly, her voice might be (might have been) shrilly, but no other voice in the recording history has ever given me even similar emotion. other may have angelical voices. truth is, operatic characters are rarely angelical.

  • Noone can doubt the impact Callas's voice, stature on stage, interpretations, acting has on audiences.AND if one wants to hear what the composer wanted one should hear Her interpretations as she had Great respect for the score. She was the most dynamic figure in Opera. However a beautiful voice is a beautiful voice which undoubtedly if not used well may Not give you the shrill another voice might, due to a better interpretation... There I absolutely agree with you..

  • Oh! That's orrible! It is the worst interpretation of this aria I have never heard! I am Italian, the Callas' pronuntiation is horrible and her voice to! I cannot understand why she is called "Divina". Every opera singers sing better!

  • Whatever you say about Callas, whether you are Italian or not, it cannot be sheer coincedence that even today we still discuss the Callas Reign in Opera, Voice and Interpretations. She was undoubtetly extremely musical and showed great respect to the works of Composers.Respect that we today should show to people such as her who managed to capture audiences all over the Universe and for such a long period of time too!!!

  • poor boy XD

  • @katerina41704 haha! operatic characters shouldn't be angelical because they're always killing each other or sleeping with each others spouses. Opera...the marriage of day time soaps, broadway storytelling, and epic music.

  • @Operamanic Totally agree

but I would say that I prefer Callas in some Operas and Caballe in others...:)

  • whos da conductor cause dat was Just ..... UGH so of it was too bad its the worst interpretation i have herd yet

  • sounds like one of those Nilsson-esque "huge volume, high tessitura with lots of squillo" voices

  • the stage is rotating.

  • I can understand the dramatic demands of this scene might cause a singer to oversing hence the sharpness. However the art of opera in its entirety is only paid justice when one is able to bring all of its aspects together including correct pitch.

  • I'm learning this song and she is definitely on pitch its that the song is a prelude to a suicide so many of the notes are sharp to enhance the uncomfortable feeling.

  • That's exactly what I mean (I have the habit of using the word "baroque" when talking about something over-ornated, regardless of the artistic period).

  • Baroque is a period. A period of a specific sound of music. and nothing about maria Callas sounds like the Baroque era. She never sang anything from this area acutally. She sang lots of bel canto operas though. maybe thats what you mean. It sounded tooo bel canto.
