@amperro ...you realize she probably didn't write this, right?

@Husseinhshp Part of the problem is that scientists do not always have much liberty to research whatever they wish. There is much pressure to publish, grant writing is time consuming, and universities/ governments are restrictive in what they consider worthy of funding. I am convinced that cyberbegging by scientists for funding is a good way to finance research. Scientists must make their case directly to the citizen without going through government bureaucracy. Tina Fey can fund AIDS research!

@amperro (cntd).... in short term relationships with minimal sex. My reaction was, "Really? You needed money and a whole study to find this out? I could have told you this, you dipshit." And there's more ridiculous studies. Even among the scientific community prioritizing is important, and if it takes Tina Fey and an audience laughing to point this out, then so be it.

@amperro I understand what you are trying to say. I work in a lab and I do research, and I'm working towards getting a medical degree. But even if they are semi-serious, she still has a point. Some of the things some scientists research (more importantly get funding for) are really not important at the moment. A few months ago, I read somewhere about some study funded by the NIH that concluded that women in long term relationships with a regular sex life are less depressed than women...

@Husseinhshp I know this is intended as comedy, but from the tone of Tina's voice and the audience reaction, there is a level of seriousness here. Tina Fey may be worth over $20 million, and her career is on the rise. An AIDS researcher's salary may reach $150,000 after 20 years (with PhD and all) . These onion scientists are unlikely to be near six figures. Sarah Palin is fair game, as are celebrities. Scientists just doing their jobs should not be made to be the villains, in good jest or not.
They already found a cure for aids. 2 months ago.

@RainbowManification Can you post a link to the article? I'm really interested in reading their method.

@Husseinhshp Well it's a cure for HIV, which causes AIDS. It won't let my post in the comment, but I PM'd you the link.

@RainbowManification Ah yes the famous Berlin patient! The media was quick to sensationalize the story. If you read the doctors' and scientists' findings in the Journal "Blood," you'll see even the researchers themselves said they did not cure AIDS or HIV; however, they did pave the way for new methods and offer a different lens to solving the problem. The Berlin patient was an exceptional case, and fraught with risks. His treatment will not be available to all, but he did help pointing the way.
