I have never been worthy of competing in this event in Japan(yes, where it was invented)but I did in the US and Europe for over a decade (+Madison and Match); it has always been acknowledged that Keirin is purely about SPEED. Those 'strategies' describe how you would like to get punished. Do you wanna fight it out in the pack or do you think you got what it takes to lead the whole thing? that's the nutshell. Brutal sport - and that is not open to debate.
Once again I'll have to stand behind John Tesh as hard as it may be. If you are you are referring to the Japanese terms: Oikona, Senko, Makuri and Sashi, then, in a way you are right - but mostly you are wrong. Those are indeed 'strategies' but they do not diminish the FACT that Keirin is about speed - more than any cycling event I can think of.
yes i know there are strategies, but in the end speed decides everything, man it's not chess! but if you are talking about strategy, it's there in the keirin also. from this aspect keirin is also not just about speed.
I wouldn't mind if you were sparkling my bashi.

man, this is an awesome race! Pate is a monster (compliment meant here) but Huebner deserved the win. And Phil Liggett is the best commentator

The Japanese (who invented keirin) have specific terms for the major keirin strategies, so there is actually quite a bit of strategy in keirin too.
