I made a video on June 20, 2009 about how to hook up dual monitors to a PC and got some requests on how to do it with Mac. Here's how!

You will need:
A Mac
A Monitor
A DVI to VGA adapter (if you use a VGA only monitor)
A DVI extention cable (if you have a monitor with a DVI port and want to use the best quality):

Links to buy cable/adapter:

Adapter (DVI to VGA):

Cable (DVI Male-to-Male):

In this video, I use an Apple PowerBook G4, and a new Gateway CRT with an ATI adapter.

How to connect the Mac to an LCD with a DVI port:
Use your own, or purchace the DVI cable that is above and connect one end into the Mac and one end into the LCD or plasma HD monitor.

How to connect the Mac to a CRT or LCD with a VGA port and adapter:
Use your own or purchace the DVI to VGA adapter from the link above and connect the CRT or LCD's VGA cable into the adapter, then connect the adapter to the Mac.

  • now lets say I have 2 monitors and put a window on the second monitor. Then I turn off the computer and dis-connect the 2nd monitor. That window is now trapped over there. How do I get the window back? (and I no longer have access to two monitors)

  • @AL00ZER

If you disconnect the second monitor while you have things on it, all of those things and desktop icons will be moved over to the remaining monitor(s). If you have two monitors with icons on both, you shut down the computer and remove a monitor, all icons will automatically be moved to the remaining monitor when you restart.

  • @WindowsAndMacintosh I know that should happen, but it didn't

  • @AL00ZER

Go to System Preferences, select Displays, and select "Detect Displays"

  • your voice is wired and a bit annoying

    *fake

  • @WindowsAndMacintosh I got it to work. yay! But the odd thing was, under the System Preferences window -> Displays, there wasn't a "Detect Displays" option. Interesting. Thank you for trying to help. Greatly appreciated :)

  • Why did you fake your voice or make yourself sound so bad?

  • @VictorGii

Exactly. I mean I'm sure a toddler has a Mac and goes on talking about Cathode Ray Tubes...

  • I can't seem to understand how people are so stupid to believe that this is your actual voice.
