While the Scottish Freemasonic Rite has been connected from a range of groups from the medieval Knights Templar to the Confederate Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, they largely confine their contemporary mundane, daily activities to raising funds and donating it to the likes of hospitals, foundations and charities (much as their earlier forbearers such as the Knights Templars and Hospitaliers ran hospitals, pilgrim convoy protection, and credit transference in Jerusalem during the Crusades, along with the Knights of Malta and St. John's Ambulance). Shriners are a branch of Freemasons and are known for playfully driving miniature cars they decorate and invest in during US holiday and celebratory parades to raise money. Again, these are complex business associations that are somewhat exclusive (though they are becoming more well-known and hence dilute) and constitute guanxi in the social sphere of especially America and certainly Australia. An example of the dilution of the esoteric nature of the Freemasons includes a classification by other Freemasons of a type of Freemason who merely shows up for the abundant free food and alcohol at Lodge events but does not contribute largely to the upkeep and financial intentions of the Lodge.
However, Freemasons and other esoteric -- usually exclusive men's 'brotherhoods', fraternities and clubs, such as the Royal Order of Buffaloes, are business associations where it is well-known that members can gain business connections by simply joining and taking part. Normally one must be nominated however by a member in good-standing. Often potential initiates are black-balled (black-banned or rejected) by members who do not like them or wish to stymie their business efforts and interest that they may obtain through the exclusive club, Lodge, or guild. This raises the same and even deeper ethical dilemmas of exclusivity and fairness in Western culture raised by Occidental critics of Oriental guanxi.
The fact that guanxi is a relatively well-known business fact and is widely studied is in contrast to the fact that not even many Westerners know about these mechanisms in their own culture (again, dilution has taken place and again the mass media has role in this demystification -- one example that leaps to mind is the widely watched and interpreted 'The Simpsons' episode ('Homer the Great') where Homer Simpson, to escape lowly drudgery in the workforce at the nuclear plant, joins the secretive men's club, the Stone Cutters, which is a blunt metaphor for the Freemasons (who are traditionally a guild of free or unbonded masons or stone workers). Not surprisingly, the actor, Harry Shearer, that voices the character of Montgomery Burns, Homer's boss at the nuclear plant in Springfield and a lower member in the Stone Cutters' than Homer, is an actual and well-known member of the quasi-clandestine Bohemian Club business association mention below. Similarly, his character on 'The Simpsons', the decrepit and malign plant owner, Montgomery Burns, is described in the cartoon's plot as a fictional 'Bonesman' from Yale's actual Skull and Bone's Fraternity (see below). Famous Freemasons are too numerous to list but have included many US Presidents such as Truman and Washington.
Other examples of men's business fraternities includes Yale's Skull and Bones Fraternity (Stevens, 1907, p.338) that both former US President George W. Bush (secret Skull and Bones fraternity name: "Gog"), his father, former US President George H. W. Bush (secret Skull and Bones fraternity name: "MaGog" -- 'The Land of Gog') [the twin giants of myth, Gog and MaGog, may been seen in Melbourne's Royal Arcade and reputedly guarded London's Guildhall after being vanquished], and G.W. Bush's 2004 Democrat opponent, John Kerry (who is G.W. Bush's cousin), all belonged to. Skull and Bones was established as a secret fraternity at Yale by the two sons of opium fast ship smugglers, General William Huntington Russell and classmate Alphonso Taft, and persists until today (although they have recently started to admit women after a campus lawsuit) (Barron, 1991). Skull and Bones was founded in 1832 after an argument among Yale's debating societies, Linonia, Brothers in Unity, and Calliope, about the season's Phi Beta Kappa awards; its original name was "the Order of Skull and Bones." Skull & Bones continues today on Yale's grounds at their fraternal house named 'The Tomb' ('The New York Times', 1903) as a peer society with Scroll and Key and Wolf's Head. Other 'Bonesmen' members among a plethora of highly place American political and economic movers and shakers include Averell Harriman who was known by the secret name of "Thor".
