Los Angeles is known as Car City, and with over 2.5 million vehicles registered in the city of LA, one would think that miles of street closures would anger residents and businesses. However, starting in 2010, CicLAvia, a periodic event that closes streets to cars and opens them up for people to explore their neighborhoods on foot and bike, has been a welcome success.

CicLAvia was started with the help of the Department of Energy to promote alternative forms of transportation. Over 100,000 bicyclists and pedestrians flock to Downtown LA and surrounding neighborhoods to experience 7.5 miles of streets closed to cars.

Opening the streets to people who are walking and biking has introduced thousands of new customers to an array of vibrant local businesses, fostered community building, and raised consciousness about alternative forms of transportation.
