Spectroscopy and future telescopes and space-based observatories (as of 1978).

-300-inch telescope: Replaced by the 9.2-meter Hobby-Eberly Telescope; operational in 1996.
-400-inch telescope: The 10-meter Keck I and II telescopes became operational in 1993 and 1996.
-600-inch National New Technology Telescope: The Thirty-Meter Telescope (1200-inch) will be completed by 2018.
-Spaced-based telescope: The Hubble Space Telescope was launched in 1990.
-Gamma ray telescopes: The Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory was launched into orbit in 1991 and operated until 2000. The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope was launched in 2008.
-Radio telescope: ALMA Telescope in Chile becoming operational in the early 2010 decade.
-Galileo spacecraft: Launched in 1989 and arrived at Jupiter in 1995.
-Venus spacecraft: Magellan orbiter was launched in 1989 and arrived at Venus in 1990.
-Mars missions: Mars Rover Missions Opportunity and Rover launched in 2003, are among other missions to Mars.
-Saturn orbiter: Cassini-Huygens launched in 1997 and arrived into orbit in 2004
-Minor planets: Dawn spacecraft launched in 2007 and arrived at Vesta in 2011 and will reach Ceres in 2015.
