The fuel in the bowl on the older YF Carters is vented at the rear of the bowl minus the tube often seen sticking up in the carb throat. The gas runs to the rear of the bowl where the vent is and drains straight into the carb throat. If the fuel pump is that weak it won't lift then it should be rebuilt or replaced.

It's because the fuel rushes back toward the tank,
keep the revs up and the pump will keep sucking fuel through, then she won't stall
