The MBTA is one of the most comprehensive and one of the most complicated public transportation systems in America. The green B subway line has the most unpredictable arrival times due to many traffic lights, frequent station stops and a high passenger volume. According to passengers who use the majority of the system, the B line is deemed the most inconvenient because the passengers have no information on arrival times. The MBTA has no plans of addressing this problem.
The T-NAV prototype will provide MBTA passengers with accurate, easily accessible online arrival information about the subway B line cars between all its stops, in both directions. The T-NAV prototype will utilize a community of users with Java compatible GPS enabled cell phones who use the B line to provide the rest of the community with accurate train arrival times. The system can be scaled to the entire Boston subway system. It will in addition provide a virtual map interface to plot trips for users based on train location data and a departure and arrival addresses.
