With gray skies on May 30, 1967 the 51st Indianapolis 500 was underway as Parnelli Jones in the STP-Oil Treatment Special turbine car (Silent Sam) is in first place before half a lap. Parnelli leads all 18 laps before rain halts the race. On the next day the race resumes with Jones leading most of the race. On lap 70 Jones gets into a mishap with Lee Roy Yarbrough. Both cars spin, but are able to continue racing. Dan Gurney briefly takes the lead. Jackie Stewart loses an engine and heads back to the pits on foot. With almost a full lap lead, Parnelli Jones seems to have the race wrapped up. Then a 6-dollar transmission bearing fails putting Jones out of the race. A.J. Foyt drives into first place with only four laps to go, but the drama is still not over. A four car-crash at the north end of the straightaway forces Foyt into some savvy driving to miss spinning cars as he takes the checkered flag! Home movie filmed from the grand stands on turn number four.

  • We too were in turn four, and in fact already leaving , when Parnelli slowly drifted past three laps from a runaway-

The turbines almost won the next year too-

No- not good for passenger cars. They weren't loud, but you couldsee the heat coming off the back of them, and the other drivers complained of that too.

  • I have never cared much for indy car racing after they banned the turbines. If they had been allowed to continue racing them, we would probably all be driving cars with turbines in them today. After all, isn't racing supposed to be the proving ground for automotive products? We are still using reciprocating engines much like the Model "T" Ford used.

  • Hello i would like a copy of you video i have been collecting on the subject for 23 years we made the turbine engines at Pratt&Whitney best regards Pierre from Pratt
