Here is a comparison of the different types of red worms used for composting. These are primarily red worms raised in bins with the exception of the Alabama Jumpers.

  • One thing on the Euros that you did not mention is that they are a bottom bin type dweller, which when combined with Red Wigglers, is a pretty efficient system for Vermicomposting.

  • Did I hear that correctly: Keep away from oak leaves? If so, why? Any further explanation would be appreciated... Thanks

  • Thanks this was important information for me.

  • This was very helpful, Thank you for sharing .

  • Thank you for taking the time to show this comparison! Very Helpful.

There is no way to eradicate one of them and not the other.

You could begin removing the European nightcrawlers and placing in a new worm bin doing this periodically to start a new bin.

You might also find the red wigglers will worm as they are actually in the same family as the European nightcrawlers. You can find out more by searching for... Relationship Between Red Wigglers And European Nightcrawlers... at WormCompostingBlog com

You can place food scraps in different corners of your worm bin over time, hence allowing you to pull the worms from the center.

Another trick would be to use Purina Worm Chow and only feed on one side of the worm bin. You could also stop feeding for a number of days using the Purina Worm Chow to insure the food is all gone before mixing the bedding when digging out worms.

Keep in mind the majority of worms will move towards the food.

  • hey I have a situation on my hands where i have a mixed bin of euros and red wigglers. I mistakingly introduced the wigglers into the system somehow. Is there any way i can get them out fast because they are taking over. I was thinking of taking them out every time i check in the bin(wigglers) to feed to my tiger oscar because there cant be more than 50 in there so..... any help exterminating just the red wigglers

  • @pitbull0592 European nightcrawlers will eat on the surface when using certain top feeds which are meant for surface feeding such as Purina Worm Chow. Of course direction should be followed. Also, if you do not have a lid and they are kept in a room with a light on, they will not want to surface.

If feeding food scraps, then they will need to be buried in the bedding material so as to break down and remain moist.

Hope this helps to resolve your issue.

  • i have a question: my european nightcrawlers never eat from the top of the bin. They'll eat the food when i mix it into the bedding but i dont want to get the whole bin sour. Any help or is there even a way to change this.
