There was a time when Superhero movies were a rarity. Besides watching Superman for the one-hundredth time there were few options. Fortunately, as HBO was gaining popularity in the early 80s they treated audiences practically on a daily basis to the 1980 film Super Fuzz, also known as Super Snooper.

I'm always amused by how many people of that generation remember this film. It was one of those movies that early HBO ran constantly. As unlikely as it might seem, there is a certain nostalgic affection for it by a handful of fans. It's not because its an underrated film that has been overlooked for years - its pretty silly and poorly made - but its just one of those films that when it was watched at the right age and at the right period of time it somehow endeared itself to a few and gained some fans.

Watching it now Super Fuzz seems like such an odd film. Terrence Hill, an Italian actor who gained fame in a series of action and western films, seems like an odd choice to play Miami police officer Dave Speed who gets superpowers after exposure from a red plutonic explosion. Ernest Borgnine throughout the film just yells. My guess is he only agreed to do the film for the paid time to spend in Miami.

The special effects are cheesy, stock footage is blatantly used and there is very little logic to Dave's newly acquired superpowers. He can see through walls, run really fast, hypnotize people....AND talk to fish? Ok, I guess I'll just go with it.

While reminiscing with some Super Fuzz fans the idea was suggested of doing an updated trailer for it and it stuck. (Along with the Super Fuzz Drinking Game - do a shot everytime the color red appears!) Originally I wanted to use the classic theme song (Once you've heard it, you'll never forget it. I realize the chorus in the song is 'Super Snooper', but I still used the common mistaken line 'Super, Super' as a tagline in this trailer. It just seems to fit nicely.), but it didnt make the cut. If I ever get around to making a longer trailer I'll try to work it in. This one I'm just considering a teaser. So for any of you Super Fuzz fans out there enjoy.

BTW since Hollywood has been remake crazy for the last several years - trying to remake good films out of all things - perhaps they might want to take another swing at this one. With the popularity of superhero flicks right now it might be the perfect time for the return of Super Fuzz!

  • I loved this film as a child.

  • Genius.

  • I gotta find this DVD.

  • I just bought the new DVD, it still is cool to watch.

  • Thanks for this. This movie always brings me back to a long past age of innocence. Great movie for such a bad movie.

  • Try watching "They call me Trinity", an exilarating spoof of the western genre, for an example. Old Bud and Terence movies were comedies, just plain fun.

  • YAY

  • I remember watching it several times on HBO! I'd forgotten what the cop looked like intil I saw this trailer.

  • It's even better now. I too need to track down a copy to show Judy..she says maybe she's seen it...but how can you forget such a classic?
