Asylum seeker debate reignites | The 7.30 Report - ABC Tv

The Oceanic Viking isn't going anywhere and neither is the reignited asylum seekers debate. It's ten days now since the Australian customs ship picked up 78 Sri Lankans from their stricken boat in international waters, and it's still not clear when or even if they will land in Indonesia.

Indo says they are willing to accept them but the "refugees" aren't happy with that. What are you taking refuge from? Where is the thank you we are so happy to be free from our oppressors? Indonesia is not a signatory of the Refugee Convention whereas Australia has signed the Refugee Convention and in doing that, our government is obligated to accept these asylum seekers, process their claims and let them become refugees if their claims are proved.

The reason why the asylum seekers do not want to disembark into Indonesia is that because Indonesia is not a signatory of the Refugee Convention, their safety in that country can not be guaranteed.

These "asylum seekers" should have been sent back to Sri Lanka weeks ago. I have no doubt in my mind that they are nothing but economic refugees. 70 dudes bring a handful of women and children.. deny going to Indonesia, deny working with the Australian government. And let's not forget the act of setting sail to assume immigration is illegal anyway!
