Guatemala spent years battling disease and extreme poverty in a nation torn apart by a 36-year civil war that included genocide of more than 1 million refugees.
Since the end of the war, in 1996, these vulnerable Mayan refugees continue to battle poverty, malnutrition and disease.
Less than 10 % of the population has access to health care.
The idea of building a clinic in Monterrico evolved from an on-going feeding and educational program initiated in this community two years ago by a community church in Guatemala City, "The Centro Cristiana Culturalidad de Guatemala". Village leaders voiced their needs for access to healthcare on a regular basis.
