'Indie' started out emerging bands/ artists signing to independent & relatively unknown record labels. those artists had kind of a similar music style, leading to those signed to these labels to be labelled as being indie; thus the indie genre was born. other acts started to develop similar music styles to this meaning they too would be categorised as being 'indie' ... Being indie doesn't necessarily mean being signed to an independent label, its also the sound and style of the act.

what i feel of the label of 'indie' is like visual art. art is seen to be the classical roman art. but dada artists in the 20th century questioned that statement . indie is a preference depending who you are . good song too

There can be a genre for it. Indie music has acquired its own quality that would justify it. If you're worried about brevity, genres typically have sub-genres to help distinguish the tonal differences (e.g. classic rock, alternative rock, pop, metal (there are more, but these are all rather broad).
