Nomac Rig #17 drilled into a shallow gas pocket soon after spudding in at a drilling depth of 900' northwest of Sweetwater, Oklahoma this evening around 6pm and burned to the ground. No injuries were reported.

Workers stated that they encountered the abnormally pressurized zone at relief time around 6pm when the relief crew was in the change house.

It was first thought that they had encountered a shallow air pocket but after testing with a "sniffer" (a device to determine the presence of hydrocarbons) the well soon caught fire.

Witnesses 3/4 of a mile to the north reported hearing a loud "boom" from their residence "and then it sounded like a jet engine was right outside our home". When they drove down to the drill site to investigate the well was discharging fluid, soon after that something ignited the gas and the rig caught fire.

Bar Hoppers (used to increase the mud weight and counter downhole pressures) were not yet rigged up. A gas separator, chokes and a BOP stack were also on location and waiting to be rigged up and tested as soon as the surface portion of the hole was completed.

Without these blowout prevention devices in place there is little to nothing that can be done to control the well.

It's very unusual to hit a shallow air pocket in the area and even rarer to encounter any hydrocarbons at this shallow depth above the planned surface casing.

El Reno based Nomac Drilling is a wholly owned subsidiary of Chesapeake Energy, one of the nations most active drillers.

  • I had actually waited for an hour for the derrick to fall....then when I was on the phone with my wife it fell! I flipped the cam on quickly but the autofocus too maybe 10 seconds and by then it was on the ground...so I have it falling but badly out of focus..I will always regret missing it on cam

  • We are working for OXY, and thank GOD they have been setting surface strings @ 540', Luckily i had my stack set when we hit one @ 945'. S. East of Crlsbad NM.. Had H2S, Natural, and CO2. If not we would haqve been a running.

  • @payton4406 i work for a nipple up company and ive noticed that they dont put BOPs until they atleast get to 1200 feet or so. This was just a freak accident

  • WE CAN CREATE A BETTER WORLD WITH JUST GETTING RID OF OUR POLUTION INDUSTRIES! WE CAN ALWAYS FIND ANOTHER WAY TO DO SOMETHING!

A WHOLE NEW ELECTRIC GRID FROM COAST TO COAST WOULD EMPLOY LOTS AND LOTS OF PEOPLE!

HYDROGEN IS THE WAY TO GO! UNTIL WE FIGURE OUT COLD FUSION TOKAMAK ETC..

  • Glad everyone was safe and I hope the locals get back to work soon. Just wanted to say, Quit bashing the American worker for providing for their family. We can not just drop Oil , not going to happen. But if we introduce other renewable resources( many) we can slowly "reduce" our dependency on petroleum. As they mentioned , wind towers are all over the place now. Biofuels are on the rise, there is no one solution that will ALWAYS work. We need a lot of oil now, but we can change that over time.

  • @payton4406 there was no BOP cause ther were setting casing shallow and they dont put BOPs on shallow parts cause very rarely do they find stuff shallow

  • ...........and over our way those wonderful wind machines had to be shut down 'cos there was too much wind for them and one of them caught fire.

The oilfield is safe most of the time.

  • Why did it skip the derrick falling. :(

  • How about everyone who wants to use this as a chance to whine and cry and gripe about this industry needs to get off the internet because back in the cave days they didnt have internet and that is what you would be living like if it wasnt for this industry. So shut your mouths and just be Thankful for the men and women who risk their lives everyday to make your lives easier!!!!

  • @njkohlman Before you get on the internet and start making nonsense comments you need to study up on whatever your wanting to gripe about that day. I'll be perfectly happy to not get on whatever bus your stupid butt is riding on. Remember this industry is the reason you can still drive your vehicle once or twice a week and the reason you will be able to cook, have hot water and all the other luxuries in your downsized house, and the bus that the crazies will get on is run by this industry!!!!!!!
