Winter Holiday Break 2009

Six students and three staff/faculty advisors made the "treacherous" drive up to the Seattle area where they volunteered at the YouthCare (http://www.youthcare.org/) organization, serving underprivileged youth in one section of the Seattle area. Arriving Sunday night and leaving Friday morning, the group helped out in various locations, which included the (at the time) to-be established Casa de los Amigos, Passages, and the Orion drop-in center. The aim of YouthCare is to reach the youth of Seattle to end youth homelessness and to help build better futures.

Duties performed varied from painting, yard work, housecleaning and decoration, deep cleaning a kitchen, wrapping Christmas gifts for kids in the various programs, and helping out in any other way we could, which also included cooking meals at the drop-in center.

Spending a week on a nearby church basement floor was part of the experience and what each individual learned and took away form the service trip will be carried with everyone throughout their lifetime, allowing them to see another side of life most do not get to see, understand and experience first-handed.
