Here's a quick tutorial how to tie a karate belt or obi.

The karate belt knot is basically a square knot with the pattern of Right over Left and under, then Left over Right and pull through the center..

When the karate belt is tied correctly, it creates a triangle on the right and an opening on the left side. The opening on the left side or heart side symbolizes the idea of having an open heart through our karate training.

  • you should change the characters on your belt theyre in chinese

  • @fmjausmerican - Which side of the belt? I had a Japanese translator provide me with the best Kanji interpretation of our school name - Maximum Impact Karate. The kanji for karate is very easy to recognize Japanese.

  • I got my gi and i put it on and the sleeves went pasted my arms and in length it went all the way down to my knees is it too big

  • @zSpiRiTxp - Gi's shrink alot over time.

  • does thsi work with all martial arts??? like Kenpo Karate?

  • @EpicCgan - Kenpo Karate ties the belt with the knot on the opposite side.

  • the first method doesn't cross in the back if you tuck one end under the other, i usually prefer to bring what will end up being my right side on the bottom...

  • what if our belt is too small(or our gut too big)

just by a little bit than what do we do?

  • He is so awkward.

  • my sensei will be happy. lol.

  • This ain't helping at all. I bought a Street Fighter Ryu costume and I forgot how to tie my obi. It's to small, so fail on my part.

  • I have a brown belt in Shotokan from years ago and recently got a yellow belt in Kenpo. Is that good? :-)
