A few months after I made this video, Phoebe was humanely released from the chronic pain that she was battling. The years of neglect caused her coffin bone in one foot to actually dissolve (from being slowly pulverized by the deformity of the hoof). The other foot was missing about 50% of the coffin bone. Her body was wracked with pain from arthritis developed from the stance she had adopted from being in one place on those deformed feet for at least a year. The hooves grew not only up and backward, but they CLOSED-in the sole of her hoof so she was left with rockers for hooves. The sole of her hoof was not even visible. The owner did not face any charges for what he did to this pony - in the State of Indiana if there is food, shelter and water - that is considered enough. Phoebe was in a pen with 2 other appearantly healthy large horses and there was an opened gate to a grass field about 40 feet from where she stood....but she could not get to it. The man had a luxury horse trailer in his driveway. When asked about her feet he said, "Hon, they just grow that way". One hoof was actually growing into her leg - my husband used a reciprocating saw to hack off the curled sections until the farrier could get here. She had not laid down in a long, long time.....

  • What state are you in? If you want me to try and help, please email me. I have managed to get the authorities out to look at a horse in CA (from Indiana)...you just have to be pushy :). I hate to think of those poor donkeys in that condition.

  • Wait did you put her down?

  • Yes, she had no coffin bone left in one foot and had only part of a coffin bone in the other. She eventually succumbed to the pain and was euthanized.

  • She looked so good!! now mind you i know little about horses ... I would have asumed those hooves would have lead to her being put down...

Have they made any progress in Indiana ... there were a large number of horses in really bad shape in the evansville area about 2 years back ... all on the same farm and it took forever to get them rescued because of some querks in Indiana law and/or the falure of agencies to work together....

  • No. No progress in Indiana. There are very few laws that protect any animal in this state. With Congressman like Mark Souder (who supports inhumane treatment at Shipshewana auction)...well, we can't expect much more :(....someone once called Indiana a "Black Hole" for animals and I think for an animal in the wrong hands it really is a hole. :( But there are good people doing what they can in IN too...so we're not ALL bad :). The laws are horrible though.

  • Dude i hope once you got her you were on the phone with a farrier before you took pictures.

  • ...not a "dude"...but, ummmm, yes; the vet and farrier were called immediatly. I hope it's apparent that we are not amatures here ;).

  • This is so incredibly sick. You are amazing. Truly, amazing. You should be ever so proud of your good work on helping this adorable mini horse. Good luck, and I am very sorry for what had to be done. I wish you were a little closer to my area, there are 8 donkey's by my home. They are all in Pheobe's condition. And every week or so, a donkey is missing. Not because they are sold, but because they perished. Humane Society's are doing nothing. Keep up your amazing work! :)

  • At least she got to know someone cared. Thanks!

  • I am living in Indiana and volunteered and adopted from a local rescue. I have seen some pretty bad cases but the life that pony had to endure was awful! Good job at least you cared enough to help. Let me know of any way I can help you in the future. I have 2 horses and not alot of money. I can help with time or contacting law makers.

  • aww this is so sad, who the hell would do sumthing lyk this,?? they wouldnt lyk it to be dun to them so why do they do it??

argh it makes me soo angry that people are so...so careless and dont think wat they r doing, she didnt deserve it, well it didnt seem lyk it. just think. lucky u saved her, sum horses/ponys/ animals are still out there now suffering, and i really wish i coulsd save them and do a great job lyk u ! :) x

  • R.I.P ??

  • 2:15 She's like, like my room! its really big! i really like it ^.^

you did a good thing by helping her. RIP ;(

  • there is a lot of abuse and neglect here in Texas too. most people turn a blind eye, and the law is too lax to get enough done. At least in Bastrop and Travis Counties.

  • Very sad, glad you could make her last few months more comfortable.
