Released in 1976 on Bang Records, which also was home to Brick, this is from another LP that is well worth seeking out called "Born To Get Down". From that album, Muscle Shoals Horns had a major hit with "Born To Get Down (Born To Mess Around)" which hit #8 on Billboard's R&B Singles Charts in early 1976.
This was recorded at the Muscle Shoals Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The studio was formed in 1969 by musicians Barry Beckett (keyboards, producer of this LP), Roger Hawkins (drums, also on this LP), Jimmy Johnson (guitar) and David Hood (bass) and that's where such legendary and groundbreaking artists as Aretha Franklin, Millie Jackson, Joe Simon, Wilson Pickett, The Rolling Stones, Paul Simon and the Staple Singers recorded some of their finest work.
The Muscle Shoals horns were of course the horn section of the Muscle Shoals Studio and consisted of:
Harrison Calloway: Trumpet, Trombone, Keyboards, Vocals
Ronnie Eades: Baritone Sax
Harvey Thompson: Soprano, Alto and Tenor Sax
Charles Rose. Trombone
When preparing to write this "descriptive text" I found that it was a near impossible task, as all the gentlemen involved have done an incredible amount of outstanding work for over 5 decades and I'm glad to see that many of them are still going strong.
At Alabama Music Hall Of Fame's web site, I found this information:
"Beginning as part of the Fame Gang, a loose knit group of session musicians who worked under the direction of Rick Hall at Fame Recording studio, the Muscle Shoals Horns soon earned their separate identity by performing on many recordings made at a variety of studios in the Muscle Shoals area.Originally composed of Harvey Thompson, saxophone, Ronnie Eades, baritone saxophone, Harrison Calloway, trumpet and Aaron Varnell, trombone, in the late 60s, the group solidified in 1970 when Charles Rose filled the spot vacated by Varnell. The lineup remained together until the mid-80s, adding a variety of specialist from time to time. While primarily a studio horn section, the Muscle Shoals Horns toured extensively with Elton John in the mid-70s, playing on the famed 'Philadelphia Freedom' recording, which also featured John Lennon. Later in the 70s, the horn section released three albums of their own compositions which capitalized on the disco dance craze, and they formed a band which toured opening for groups such as Parliament-Funkadelic, as well as headlining shows in smaller venues."
Harrison Calloway biography by Steve Huey (AMG)
"Achieving his greatest success as a member of the Muscle Shoals Horns, trumpet player Harrison Calloway also doubles on keyboards. His songwriting and arranging skills were in evidence even during his college years, when he wrote a new fight song for the University of Tennessee. In addition to recording with the Horns, Calloway wrote and arranged for various soul and blues artists and labels around the South during the '90s and into the new millennium."
