@jwalsh67 I love how much of a legend this guy is. The story I heard was that he would extinguish cigarettes in a can of ether with enough confidence to keep the ether from exploding.

I studied organic chemistry, and one of the professors in the department was a former graduate student of Woodward's. Apparently, he used to chain-smoke during group meetings and toss the butts (still lit) into the trash can across the room. It was planned, but never carried out, that a balloon filled with hydrogen gas would be placed in the trash can prior to R.B.'s arrival.

R.B.'s parents were of British descent, but what you're hearing is largely a Bostonian accent. I'm an organic chemist, and I love all the nuances that famous professors of the field put into their presentations. It's too bad this wasn't in color--Woodward was well known for his use of colored chalk.

I've heard of a video where Woodward finishes an entire bottle of Jack Daniels while giving a seminar. If anyone has this, I'd like to see it posted!
