Born near Paris to a high-ranking French official in 1867, Pierre Bonnard had a happy and comfortable childhood. He studied for law, but ran into artistic friends that changed his life. He failed his civil service examination and entered the military for six months, then opened his own art studio. He painted, designed furniture, built stage sets, and made puppet show puppets. He married and eventually spent more and more time out of Paris, working on one-man shows. He was considered traditionally impressionistic, though he gradually developed his own style with richer colors. Music is "Serenade for Strings," composed by Antonin Dvorak.
