Jason Yurcic talks and reads poetry at the UNM Bookstore, bookstore.unm.edu, in honor of National Poetry Month.
The son of a murdered father and addict mother, Yurcic spent his youth at his grandfather's junkyard in Albuquerque. A former professional boxer turned poet, he overcame a threatened 16-year jail sentence and a life of gangbanging and drugs.
Yurcic's poetry collections include "Odes to Anger" and "Voice of My Heart." He works with New Mexico poet Jimmy Santiago Baca to bring writing workshops to prisons, juvenile detention centers and schools for at-risk youth.
