It's utterly amazing how different the dress code was for men and women 110 years ago. Working class people were expected to wear their best clothes to attend a fair or exposition; hats, long dresses, dress shoes, suits, ties, etc... Today at a similar event, men and women would all want to wear blue jeans: even though the average person today is much, much more affluent than in 1901.
Great history... thanks. I remember being astonished on the 100th anniversary of McKinley's assassination in 2001 that there was no mention of it in the media (History Channel, Discovery, etc.).
