New Orleans-based Blanchard and Co. has sold the rare 1787 gold Brasher Doubloon (pronounced Bray-zher), considered to be America's first gold coin. The unique $15 denomination gold coin is unique in that it is the only known copy with Brasher's "E.B" hallmark punched on the eagle's breast. It was minted years before the United States Mint began producing coins, and it was made to the same standard ultimately adopted by the U.S. Mint for American coinage. This is the highest price ever paid for a gold coin in a private transaction.
