Through The Fire...

I get asked a lot why I wasn't allowed to sing for the wildcard show during American Idol season 3. I don't really explain it in the beginning of this video, so it's ok if you can't understand me. :) There's no real reason why I wasn't allowed, it was a twist that was only on that season and the whole wildcard round was abolished after that.. I had a feeling during the wildcard week that I was going to be one of the four to be cut because it is a tv show and they do weird things to "shock" and "awe", I guess. They also had made a point ("they" being producers and judges) of what I felt was building me up, telling me how great I was doing and how I should win the whole thing. Something didn't feel right about that, I think they really want to see surprise in the contestants faces and so if I was really to go on and make it they would have been silent (or criticized me more.)

I knew it wasn't fair going into it and at the time I was really trying very hard to keep everything in perspective... Looking back I don't know if I would do anything different, I don't think there is anything I could really do to change whatever was going to happen on the show (even losing weight! ;))

I knew that after American Idol, whatever happened, I would continue singing, and I am really happy that I am still doing exactly that.

Sorry that there is no concrete reason. Sometimes things just don't make sense. :)

This is a show done right after the wildcard show in 2004.. in my hometown of Santa Cruz, California.. I wanted to sing "Through the Fire" since I hadn't been able to sing it for the wildcard-- I was really, really, ill for this performance. That's why I look so pained for it all. My father is playing the piano (that mad scientist) and Keith Graves is playing bass.

Wow! "Got a shiver down my spine when you hit "For a CHANCE to be with you!" had know clue you were so talented. My favorite Chaka Kahn song.

Side note: I got hypothermia once in Santa Cruz trying to surf. I'm sure a bit before your time. A black man trying to surf for the 1st time. lol. But i had a blast other then the hypothermia. i walked around on the boardwalk for two shivering. Then moronically i went back out and "surfed" another 3 hours. Never did catch a wave either. Still had fun.

you were better than than the rest expect for la toya and fantasia.

you should have beaten jennifer if you were in the wildcard.

It would be so cool if she tried out for the Voice next season - a lot more talent on that show anyway and I would love to see her have a second chance and let the audience members decide . If you are listening , Lisa, please consider this - they are accepting auditions still , I believe . Some were chosen from youtube . the way i see it her, nicole tranquilllo, and devyn rush are better than AI anyway .. the judges have their favorites.. obviously ..and if they spot a dark horse... they kick em out.
