have you not referred to the minecraft wiki page at all? that's the page that tells you all the things that you tend to forget about crafting in minecraft, i use it religiously myself, actually helped me create a really good high level enchantment room in one of my houses on our new map.

You may already know this but you need Wheat to breed animals.. You can fence them and collect wool, but they wont breed unless you use Wheat. And Sheep in the new update regain wool eating grass...
