What could convince me to walk away from friends, family, and grad school and come to a country half a world away? One man, one book, and an important issue.

This project is inspired by Dr. Jeffrey Sachs and the opportunity I had to hear him speak while on scholarship at Notre Dame University. After hearing him speak, I withdrew from grad school, packed my bags, and flew to Bangladesh - a country that doesn't get in the media nearly enough despite having such a large population living in extreme poverty.

  • A rigged election is a rigged election. Some are more violent that others for sure. but NONE are democratic. I commend your interest in Bangladesh, but you shouldn't discount the fact that lack of political transparency is one of the reasons there is so much poverty in Bangladesh.

    Large scale corruption=Poverty.

  • Remember Florida? Claims of Diebold voting irregularities in the 2000 US election?

No country is perfect. And claims of corruption and imperfect elections are simply scapegoats some use to ignore the fact we can end global poverty in our lifetime.

  • Bangladesh has never had an election that wasn't rigged...its far from a democracy.

  • You're totally entitled to your opinion. But you need only watch the elections in Iran, Afghanistan, and Zimbabwe to realize that Bangladesh is light years ahead in terms of democratic elections.

  • brother sawn. u r just a great person. please be our prime miniser and change my bangladesh.

  • I'm completely flattered that you'd say that. But that's not at all what I was going for.

Besides, I'm not too sure Bangladeshis would want a foreigner as PM :)
