Paul Whiteman & His Orch. - Charleston (unpublished version), 1925

NOTE: We may like Paul Whiteman or not, but his amazing 1925 rendition of the immortal Mack&Johnson's "The Original Charleston" remains forever a Sèvres meter standard for all musical interpretations of the craze of Roaring Twenties (mx Victor 19671B).

Here's one more Whiteman's version - and completely unknown, but in my opinion who knows, if not the best. It was probably one of many takes made on the 5th July 1925 on the recording session at Victor studios in NYC. It was, however, never accepted for the further release and now appears only in Paul Whiteman's vinyl or CD anthologies.

  • Grzegorz,

    I love this Charleston.

What a NIGHT! Rudy and I Tango-ed and Charleston-ed the night away.

We raised our glasses toasted YOU at 12.That Rudy can really do a mean

Charleston...he's not as good as YOU though. :-D Happy New Year!.

  • Genioa, I'm glad you were charlestoning all night with Rudy. As far as I know from him he is rather a tango-lover but his fidgety feet must do very well in the charleston too, I guess

  • I made my Mom teach to do the Charleston when I was 13yo (1958)- she thought I was nuts, butt we had a ball if she were alive shed be 103 yo. Flapper material indeed she graduated HS in 1928.

  • This is the epitome of the 1920's.

  • This version of "Charleston" by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra is not "unpublished" but was issued on Timeless CD 1093, from which this upload no doubt was taken.

  • 1925... it must have been a great time back then!!!

  • One of the most badass songs I've ever heard in my life. The song has some kind of "attitude" to it I can't describe.

  • @boojum2222 Hahaha ! Very funny comment. Greetings
