@homersparents Those string of electrochemical that you so stoically dismiss happen to be the route for a higher understanding of life. 3 things are needed for intelligent life, Sentience, Emotions, & Consciousness. And the more a person or thing is in tune with these things, the more potent everything seems to them. Artists feel emotions stronger than non-artistic persons. And what if these creatures have even the slightest degree of those 3 things? There's evidence for it.

A carrots right to live is not based on its level of self awareness. Its right to live is derived form its status as living. Your argument basically boils down to how you feel about the eating of certain foods. sentient is nothing more than complex string of electrochemical signals. Those signals are NOT more significant because of my or your ability to sympathies. Carrots have a right to live that is not based on your ability to understand their pain.
