This is a model of a house that I built (in real life) a number of years ago. I wanted to see if I could rebuild it with what plans, photos and memories that I still have.

I built the deck model years ago using Ray Dream Designer and Virtus Walkthrough (neither program is around anymore) to visualize what the deck would look like before I built it (in real life) as an addition to the house. I built the deck model to scale and it imported (.dxf) nicely into SketchUp after all these years. That was the starting point of this recent modeling project.

I did the time lapse sequence at the end to showcase SketchUps ability to set time and date for determining location of shadows. I also used its watermark (picture overlay) capability to see if I could line up the angle and lens settings of the camera snapshots that I had taken back in the day. I think it worked well.

Incidentally, I also composed and produced the accompanying soundtrack over an excellent beat by Zajo called "loop39.wav" from Freesound (http://www.freesound.org) used under a Creative Commons sampling license.

  • How did you do the time lapse at the end plz reply

  • I used 'Scenes' to make the subtle movement and to change the position of the (sun's) Shadows. I made the sky in SketchUp green.and rendered the file. I brought the video into Sony Vegas, chromakey'd out the green and replaced it with still images of clouds and so forth that I animated for movement.

  • hey mate its amazing work, mind blowing...but this animation u done in google sketch up or for animation u have used some other softwares ?? will u help me ?? coz i have done with my 3D model on sketch up but when i m converting it into animation its not giving me good quality

  • I rendered (and uploaded) the SketchUp animation at two different resolutions. 1280 X 720 and 640 x 360. I believe I rendered the Sketchups as .avi with a Cinepak codec. I did get some sound sync problems at the higher resolution for some reason. Who knows. I used Sony Vegas to pull everything together. For the faux timelapse sequence, I chromakeyed in the sky backgrounds. I rendered that using .wmv. So there's two bouts of compression but the HD version looks pretty good to me on Youtube.

  • I'm a home builder in Austin TX and wanted to ask if I could post the video of your sketchup on my website as an example of what can be done using such animation software. Thanks so much.

  • Yeah, I've got no problem with that. Let me know what I can do to help.
