actually I heard a Bob Gibson version from the early 80's. I'm pretty sure that it was just a new trick for the old dogs.

He's equally known for "The Unicorn" and "Cover of the Rolling Stone", i suspect.
And Bob GIbson and Dennis Lecorriere (from Dr Hook and the Medicine Show) did an earlier recording, and Shell recorded it even earlier...
