I would like to talk about a noticible difference between Japanese and English by sharing a cartoon movie "Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro)." In the movie, a boy was asked if his parents were around there but he didn't say anything but just pointed to the field. It looks like he was rude but not really. It's a culture in Japan. So look at the English ver. and you will find he answers what the guy on a truck asks.

This tells me what translation is about. It's not about languages but about two different cultures.

  • For some cultures in would be considered rude not to answer, while in others, it would show you as a humble person.
