Aren't the diatoms protected by a hard shell casing? Does the Amoeba disolve these shells?

There are hundreds of fine pores in the silica shell. The the diatom contents will be digested and removed. The shell will be dumped. This is not a very good example, there are too many diatoms to see the process clearly. I'll keep my eye out for better ones.
