An American music classic to be sure / an icon of the 60's. Just plain beautiful writing. " I will drink the wine while it is warm, and never let you catch me looking at he sun ". Seize your moments everybody.

no, he said he wrote it after his girlfriend left him ! They used to picnic in Mac Arthur park near her insurance office.

@mythtree I just love your choice of words here my. Webb deserves all the praise he justly recieves. I said in a previous comment that I love his beautiful chord changes. "Poignant piquant layer of meaning" Bravo on that one!! Last night I watched Camelot once again and Richard Harris was so special. And you're right Webb really appreciated the Harris take on his masterpiece. Maybe even "more than we know" So long!

@stradaveriusfiddle Hey strad, how ya doin?I too play piano&sing.Mainly Chicago for 35 years. Tell ya what, I have come to prefer Jimmy doing his own tunes than all the other fine performers. Like you, i just love his piano. Not filled with bullshit arpeggios and runs, but beautiful and thoughtful chord changes. Right? I think he's now 66. May God give him many more years to write and perform. i really love an obscure Webb tune: "Only One life" It's on YouTube. We were lucky to be in his era.

Guaranteed the Soft Parade by Jim was inspired by this song.

This is his masterpiece. It's complex, nuanced, and beautiful. I've had the privilege of seeing JW twice in the last couple of years and he's a great performer, musician and storyteller. He mentioned that a few years ago he decided not to do MacArthur Park at a concert and a lot of fans were disappointed, so he now feels he needs to do it, in spite of the fact that, "it's really hard". You can see him working through it, which is probably why he performs it last. A humble, talented man.

If you check out the other video of him playing this song when he was younger, (w/ much longer hair, and beard) he may have been 25 to 30 years younger, it is clear to see that he really worked at evolving the piano accompaniment he's done with this song.

I play blues-rock, Lynrd Skynrd style piano pretty well, enough to have done a variety of gigs around L.A.,...mostly bar band deals. But listening to how Jimmy Webb plays this, is amazing, and really makes me wish I could get him to give me piano lessons.

@goneforacuppa Never heard of it but I will look it up. Webb=genius! "Didn't We", a great tune.

Jim Webb never revealed his meaning of this song. He believed what an individual thought it meant was as good as the next persons opinion.
While listening to an oldie program a few years ago this song was voted worse song of the era.
This song is unquestionably one of or the best song of its era, and one of the all-time greatest.
