Dr. Bruce Powell is founder and head of school of the New Community Jewish High School in West Hills, California. He has helped to found, develop, and lead two other Jewish high schools in the Los Angeles area and has helped to develop 23 Jewish high schools in cities throughout the United States. He holds a doctorate in education from the University of Southern California and has won both the Milken Family Foundation Jewish Educator Award (2005) and the Covenant Award (2008). In this made-for-PEJE video, Dr. Powell becomes animated about advancement.
About his connection with PEJE, Dr. Powell had this to say:
"In 1997, before I knew of PEJE and the Day School Leadership Training Institute (DSLTI), I can safely say that I was a Jewish high school principal pretending to be a head of school. It was only through my work with PEJE and DSLTI, both as a student, senior faculty member, and coach that my professional practice evolved and, frankly, transformed to a full understanding of Jewish school headship, to real leadership that involved a seamless combination of compelling "story teller," chief purveyor of the school's mission, vision, and philosophy, and primary partner in the sacred work of sustaining the school's very existence through financial resource development. PEJE understands that headship is, in the end, all about the '100-year' vision for Jewish schools, life, and values."
