The Modoc Indian Wars of the 1870s in a original song by Patrick Karnahan of the Black Irish Band. From the CD, California Story. Also features two time Grammy Award Winner, (Native American), Mary Youngblood.
The song is based on the Modoc people who were told to leave their land so the whites could farm and live there. Captain Jack, the Modoc leader, said hell no, and joined 60 of his brave men in the Lava Beds. They held off over 1000 troops for months. Hey, just give the song a spin and you will hear the whole story!!!!-

The song is from the bands new 19th CD album, "California Story". The CD features 17 songs and the vocals of Michael Martin Murphey on three of those songs. Go to CD Baby and type Black Irish Band-- Patrick

Chorus
C Bm Em Bm
And the snow lies low on General Canby's Cross-, as winter winds howl and moan.

C Bm Em D -- Am
Oh' dear Captain Jack, tried to lead his people back, but the white man would not leave him alone

1st Verse
Em D
On the plains of California, near the south of the Oregon Boarder.
Em D
Lived a man called Captain Jack, who tried to lead his people back.
Em D
He was made into a Modoc Warrior, when the government tried to order.
Em D D7
Treaties they would make him sign, to steal their land and rob'em blind.

Chorus

2nd Verse
Now never would his children roam, the freedom of their native home.
So He answered the general trip, with his hand on the pistol grip.
General Canby died in seconds flat, now there was no turning back
To the Lava Beds they hide, the Calvary chased but the cost was high!

Chorus

3rd Verse
Now the Army it was sent, to try and take the warrior bent-
-on living out the live he knew, wanting only the right to choose.
There were over a hundred soldiers who lost their lives to several warriors
Finely there's no food to eat, position lost and they grew weak!
Captain Jack was caught and hung along with many faithful sons---

  • I don't pretend that I know the horrid story of native America. All I know is that Native tribes raised money for the starving Irish during the great famine. For that they hold a deep affection in our hearts today.

  • I grew up near the Lava Beds National Monument and it is a very spiritual special place.

  • I am Chippewa, but I have been to Captain Jack's stronghold. It is extremely hot and the volcanic rocks will do in a pair of shoes in no time. Captain Jack did not deserve to be hung, nor his body displayed around the country. He was a great general and soldier fighting for his land. Fred Jack Amikoonsgiyamanitoumahwhingon.
