Actually, I'm going to in part retract my statement about the carbon dating... I read that it was over 400 years old based on carbon testing some time ago on wikipedia, but there is no source for this claim and when I google 'Passai Carbon test' every reference I seem to find appears to be taken from wiki, which doesn't prove a thing... So I'm going to say it may be false...
Thanks for the input. From what I've read, Matsumura is "believed" to be the creator. I say "believed" as so many Okinawan records were destroyed by WWII bombing that it's difficult to be sure of anything. This would account for varying dates from on different sites.
I don't know anything about the silk drawings. My source is the book Shotokan's Secret, but Dr Bruce Clayton, which is very well researched. I accept that this is possibly wrong, but I'm taking it on good faith.
Um... According to what I've read Sokon Matsumura was not the creator of Bassai/Paul-Sek, based upon a carbon tested, silk drawing of the form which shows that the form in question is over 400 years old.
Matsumura Sokon's life is reported variously between the following dates on various websites I've been too... 1809-1901 or 1798–1890 or 1809–1896 or 1800–1892.
@TKDCohnBunkai
I doubt that we'll ever really know for sure. We can only take an educated guess. Thanks for getting back to me with that
