Als schaker won Garry Kasparov alles wat er te winnen viel. Sinds twee jaar heeft de grootmeester zijn strijd van het schaakbord verlegd naar het politieke toneel. En ook daar ging hij voor het hoogst haalbare; De oppositieleider wilde meedoen aan de presidentsverkiezingen van 2008. En hoewel hij de oppositie achter zich wist te verenigen, gooide Poetin al voor de verkiezingen roet in het eten.
Garry Kasparov is niet langer in de race om het hoogste ambt. Het voormalige enfant terrible van de schaakwereld had zich het politieke spel razendsnel eigen gemaakt. Met succes wist hij de verschillende oppositiepartijen bij elkaar te brengen onder de naam 'Een Ander Rusland'. Onder de bezielende leiding van Kasparov trokken zij door de straten en eisten een Rusland zonder Poetin en zijn beleid. Terwijl Kasparov de 'pijn van zijn land' als belangrijkste reden aanvoerde voor zijn strijd om het presidentschap, lijkt het spel op hoog niveau hem in het bloed te zitten. "Het is zinloos om een spel te beginnen als je niet voor de overwinning speelt!"

Tegenwerking van Poetin was te verwachten. De kans dat hij het in het Westen populaire schaakbrein als rivaal bleef dulden was klein. Poetin heeft immers aangegeven na de verkiezingen aan de macht te willen blijven als premier en dan wil hij een eigen kandidaat als president naast zich.

Maar hoe groot de sabotage wel was werd duidelijk tijdens het draaien van de documentaire. Filmmakers Allard Detiger en Masja Novikova wisten het vertrouwen van Kasparov te winnen en volgden hem een jaar lang op zijn campagnereizen door Rusland. Tot de tegenwerking te groot werd. Het reizen werd de kandidaat onmogelijk gemaakt en hij werd meerdere malen gearresteerd.

De tegenwerking werd zo groot dat Kasparov, die nooit eerder in zijn leven verloor, zich gedwongen zag de strijd voorlopig te staken.

i´m sick of your foolish conspiracies! has anyone of you ever asked himself the question why all your millionaires like to travel abroad? they all take your money and spend it in the western world! what´s about your infrastructure, your economy. look how you handle your own people. how do you handle your minorities, all the people without money. you don´t even seem to care! and then you have a few people to stand against those unequality, what are you doing, blame the rest of the world!

i´m wondering why so ´many´ russians are afraid of kasparov. what is wrong to be for human rights etc. the so called patriot russions should see the truth about their country and how corruption has led them to the state they are!

what are the so called leaders really doing for their country, they do not invest, they don´t develop, they just want money, power and all those low ´western´desires they demonize for themselves!

what´s wrong about the right to speak or to demonstrate! stop blaming.

Garry Kasparov should stay the hell back in united states. We don't want that traitor in russia. For gods sacks most of the time he protest and campaigns in english. If going run in nation your should speak its language. Hes serves western influences and has no business in russia.
