umm... I did use normal thread to hem my jeans instead of topstitch thread.
Haven't had any problems so far... so I don't really think topstitch thread is necessary??
well, the thread did snap when I was sewing over chunky areas, sometimes... well... I was hemming 5 pairs of jeans, so yeah...
