  • "The Sinking of the Titanic," was made in New York City on September 1924. It quickly became number three on the Billboard/Variety charts, and remained there for ten weeks. This solo recording sold over one million copies." More info on Ernest Stoneman at ortheyautoharps website

  • Many times I've said it-the best songs are about true events or truly felt emotions. Shipwrecks, train wrecks, car crashes, even plane disasters as recent as Flight 93 have been immortalized in song. This is an awesome old song.

  • Could someone please upload Mountaineer's Courtship?

  • Thank you for posting this song by my Grandfather! His very first recording was in 1914.

  • Thank you for posting this song by my Grandfather! His very 1st recording was made in 1914.

  • @Minstrelcraft 1924 must have been a good year for sad songs sung to a peppy tune. Just prior to the recording of this song, Vernon Dalhart recorded "The Wreck of the Old 97" which became the first million-selling record. Pop Stoneman's recording must have been the second. Wonder which one came next?

  • the song probably sold so much due to 1 a wonderful performer lol

but the disaster was fresh in peoples mind's and this song is just wonderful today 86 years later!
