  • When the king asked about the little childen I vould have said: "I placed just enough gunpowder to kill only those who were in the parlament"

  • In all certantity, there would have been a mass migration of the (surviving) Catholics to the New World. Jamestown would still have been founded, but it wouldn't have been known as Jamestown. ( Probably under the name of one of the Catholic monachers.)

  • @pete6256 I would have been Dick Dicksby, m'lord sherrif's man. Or perhaps I would have been Sidney Shaftspoon

  • The principles of psychohistory in action. History will probably go the way it goes regardless of individual's actions, because of the socio-political climate of the world.

If not Hitler, someone else. If not Alexander, someone else. Long-term changes arise organically, individual actions are merely a product of the environment they occur in.

  • @brusselstarlight

To be honest, I expect it would have just occurred maybe slightly earlier or later and maybe in a slightly different place. But ultimately, I expect things would have worked out more or less how they are, with a few changes one way or the other to things like dates, people involved etc. The 13 Colonies would still have probably revolted, and the United States or whatever stood in its place would probably have been founded on similar principles.

  • @merlin173 There were also plenty of Catholics at the opening of Parliament, so like the suicide bombers of the World Trade Centre also killed innocent Muslim Americans, so the plotters were so extreme, they thought it worthwhile to murder their own in pursuit of the goal.

  • Have a look at 'Gunpowder Plots - a celebration of 400 years of Bonfire Night' which has various essays about the ritual and the history of Guy Fawkes.

  • @MsTruNorth Antonia Fraser wrote an essay called 'The Gunpowder Plot Succeeds' which spelt out an alternate history spreading from the blast. And the Catholics didn't have it very good...

  • This would have changed the history of the world. The English never would have colonized America. The Jamestown colony was founded in 1607, and if the gunpowder plot had been successful on November 5th 1605, then James Town Virginia would never have existed.
