At least 27 vehicles crashed on the northbound carriageway of the M5 near Taunton, causing several explosions.
Police confirmed that "some" people had "tragically lost their lives" amid fears up to 10 people had killed in the "horrific" accident, described as one of the "worst traffic accidents" in recent memory.
On Saturday morning police said that at least 43 people were injured in the crash, with at least ten suffering life threatening injuries.
Witnesses said heavy fog and wet weather had caused "horrendous" driving conditions, prior to the accident just before 8.30pm.
At least 20 cars and six heavy goods lorries were involved in the crash, described as "more like a scene from Afghanistan",near the exit to Junction 25, police said. Several were engulfed in flames.
