Why dont you try to install the latest WOODr4 version for the r4? trow everything of your sd (or putit on a map on you computer) put the new system on you ds. and the menu should pop up immediatly after youve started your ds

i had the same problem. if ur micro sd card (the little memory stick) says micro sd HC on it, the r4 wont load... if thats not the case i have no clue=) hope dis helps
