Hey, why wear a shoulder harness when it feels so FREE not to wear 'em. Whoever the tech advisor was in this movie ~ needs to take a nut shot just on general principles.
This departure is out of what is now called Ronald Reagan Airport, National in the old days.

@mcdonnell220 That was a great movie! For it's day, it was very accurate and extremely well filmed.
-
There is a park at the end of that runway..Gravely Point, you can almost reach up & touch the planes.
-
With Boeing 707's already flying by then, the DC-6's and 7's days were numbered.
-
Dana Andrews is the pilot of course, and John Kerr is the co-pilot. Kerr played Lt. Joe Cable in "South Pacific" in 1958.
-
we've come along way, not just in plane design but cinema too!
-
"The Crowded Sky" is fun to watch, it's pretty much of a rip-off of "The Hight and the Mighty
-
The scenery as the plane gained attitude was Washington DC. WOW.
This looks like a North American Airlines DC-6B.That airline is now out of business and was by 1955.

D'oh! You are SO RIGHT. :-) From what I could gather, this was the final livery, "Trans American" (Trans State for the film). Thanks so much for the info.
