Wacky Kart is an arcade kart racing game and the prototype from which Wacky Wheels (by Apogee Software) and Skunny Kart (by Copysoft) were done. The developer, Andy Edwardson, has been inspired by Super Mario Kart on the Super Nintendo. He wrote an engine to display a rotating three-dimensional map on the screen. This has been considered as being impossible in that time, because the PC didn't have such a DSP chip to do this fast enough.

However, he actually did it and he presented his result to the Copysoft crew. Copysoft was quite excited, but they didn't make a commercial agreement. Edwardson wasn't sure if they ever get this game. He came across Apogee and they fought with Copysoft over royalties ending up that Apogee got the right to distribute the game. The developer just made one mistake: He left the source code on the demo disk which he handed out to Copysoft. At the end, Skunny Kart was released before Wacky Wheels.

Thanks to FamicomGamer78 for the raw video. According to him, this game doesn't have any sounds and you have to use a joystick in order to play it. It just contains three single player courses and only one multiplayer test course without being able to actually play against someone else.

Are you in any way insinuating that a video of a raccoon in a go-kart DOESNT require an epic audio acompanyment?

  • 3:41 this map didnt make it to wacky wheels, shame, it looks nice

  • All I can tell is that the music for this game is truly epic in scope and scale. Wow, the music mastermind behind all this music must be some sort of super-genius beyond his time. Incredible.

  • @Doom2Guy That's what I though.

  • Wow, the track looks like it's stripped right out of Mario Kart

  • Wow! This is so epic. I didn't know there were a released prototype version of Wacky Wheels. Great find!

  • @bugabuse Because the camera does not move relative to the character. The environment moves relative to the camera.

  • Why does it seem like the environment is moving and the character is stationary?

  • Ah I remember wacky wheels from my youth, good times. Accompanying music is pretty dope BTW.

  • Wow, the music is really awesome? I remember Whacky Wheels, but didn't play it a lot actually. I just was not into that type of game back then. But... great music.
